Off the streets and attending school for over 50% of the street kids in our program!

JSS Suttur, a school built specifically for children from poor backgrounds and substandard living conditions, educates 3,000 children each year. The school's goal is to teach the children how to be good citizens and to give them everything that middle- and upper-class children receive: housing, clean food and water, a solid education, medical attention, regular haircuts, and productive extracurricular activities.

The kids return to visit their families during major holidays and summer vacation (April/May). Their moms are quite happy and relieved that their kids are in a healthy and safe environment and are receiving good schooling, food, and care.

If you're wondering why the other kids in our program aren't at Suttur, the reasons vary. A few are too young (like little Parveen who is three). A few parents refused to let their kids go, which makes admitting the child nearly impossible. We continue to watch out for these kids and, with your support, we'll be able to open a city shelter for them -- and the hundreds of street kids out there -- that will offer informal tutoring and vocational training opportunities.

Please visit our site often and our News for You section for continuous updates on how the kids are doing in school.

Tutoring for Special Needs

In addition to supplying notebooks and other relevant school supplies, we're also helping a couple of our kids get the attention they need to catch up in school. For various reasons, they are behind in school but have a strong desire to learn and continue their education. Now they've got a tutor who takes a special interest in educating poor children.

Prema Prema. A fifth-grader in school, but is starting from the beginning with her tutor. And she's loving it! Asha Asha. After a few rough years on the street, is now back in school and stays at Karunya Mane.
